Wroclaw - Information

Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, is situated in the center of the Silesian lowlands in the place where Olawa, Ślęza and Bystrzyca rivers flow into the Odra river. It has the fourth largest population and fifth largest area of all cities in Poland. The Town Hall is at 17'02 latitude and 15 07 longitude. The southern part of the city is at the highest elevation (120 meters above the sea level) and the western part is at the lowest point.

The Odra river and its tributaries and canals make Wroclaw a unique city of 12 islands. The two banks of the river are connected by 56 bridges. The longest bridge, Most Warszawski, is 229 meters long.

The Wroclaw region has a mild climate and the weather can be characterized as changeable. Average annual temperature is 8'2 C and the coldest month's (January) average temperature is 1.9 C and the warmest month's (July) average temperature is 17.8 C. The aggregate precipitation is about 580mm.)

Wroclaw, with international and national highways and 11 railroad lines, is one of the largest transportation centers in Poland .

Wroclaw has 2 railroad terminals, 21 railroad stations, bus terminal PKS and two river ports. The city also has an international airport that has connecting flights to Warsaw, Frankfurt and Duseldorf Travelers can fly into these major cities and obtain flight connections to the rest of the world.

Transportation, heavy machinery, steel construction and food industries play major roles in the economy of the Wroclaw region. Wroclaw is also one of the greatest intellectual centers in Poland. Its cultural and intellectual life evolves around 13 higher education institutions (including University of Wroclaw and Wroclaw Polytechnic) and 5 theaters, an opera, a philharmony, numerous clubs, galleries and museums.The circular shape Panorama Raclawicka is the major cultural attraction of the city. It has a huge (120 m. X 15 m.) panoramical painting by Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak depicting a famous April 4, 1794 Raclawice Battle between Polish rebels led by Tadeusz Kościuszko and tzar's army led by general Aleksander Tormasow.

Wroclaw is one of the best cities in Poland for sightseeing. The city has close to 3000 historical sights with a famous architectural complex Ostrów Tumski, John the Baptist Cathedral and the Town Hall among others.
